Gas warfare in WW1 brought about the obsolescence of Hardbread packaged in carboard boxes, but the realization tdidn't come until they had made many millions of pounds. These were retained in the States to be used in training, and the supply in France was retained fo use by rear echelon troops.

When the war ended in 1918, most of the supply of Hardbread in Cardboard boxes was almost immediate sold as surplus to makle room in warehouse for the new Hardbread in sealed metl containers. Many Campers, Trekkers, and Sportsmen bought it as trail food, so much so that even today original Hardbread from before WW1 is still being found in attics and barns across the US.
