  • In 1910, the US Army introduced to the world a Load Bearing System that changed how man carried loads could be carried for long distance marching. Backpackers of today will disagree, because they benefit from 110 years of development, but at the time the concept of carriying one's sleep/shelter and cooking systems in one package along the back was revolutionary.

Because the design was creating such a stir Warren Miller, then Editor and contributor to Field and Stream wrote an article for the magazine showing his design for a pack that would emulate the system. We can find that article in a somewhat condensed version in his 1921 book "The Sportsman's Workshop". Its important to note that this pack is a design, not a product. As a DIY design versions of this pack would have undoubtedly been made, and each one of those would have refelected the spirit, intent, and general layout of the design with minor changes due to material availability and personal preferences.

Miller's design, if followed to the letter, results in a pack that is not much more than a day pack without room for a sleep system. Our version cleaves closer to the Army's 1910 pack design intent of carrying both your sleep/shelter and cooking systems. The principal difference is the omission of the bottom flap and extending the length of the main body. We've included sheep skin should pack pads, a period correct solution to a common problem with period packs. It will also include a large stuff sack.

The Army Type Pack is the perfect companion for carriage of your Keewaydin pack and/or our upcoming Kenwood Sleeping Bag.
